Spencer Graham, DVM

“I love to keep things light and fun, and I love the relationships I can build with my clients. I grew up working for a vet that had been practicing for around 30 years, and he still had clients from early on in his career. This inspired me, and showed me that we are not only practitioners but family members!”

Why did you become a vet?

I had always grown up with dogs as a young kid. But I always considered them my parents’ dogs. My mom had a long haired Dachshund rescue named Honey, and my dad had a Golden Retriever named Georgia. Finally, after a few years of bargaining, and taking care of a couple hamsters and beta fish, I was able to adopt Max. Max was a meathead of a dog. You know the ones, the dogs with more toes than brain cells, and don’t quite know just how big they are! Yeah that was Max, and I loved him so much! But one day, he just wasn’t himself, he started to lose weight, cough, wasn’t as energetic and we took him to a vet. Through multiple tests, and different vets we finally found out that he had not only Heartworms but also Lyme Disease. From that point on I watched my best friend slowly wane in front of my eyes, and as a kid in middle school, I just couldn’t do anything. Eventually, I came home from school one day and he wasn’t there. From that point on, I knew I never wanted to feel that helpless again, and I never wanted other people to feel that helpless, so I dove head first into this profession and I haven’t looked back since. If you ever find yourself in my office, you’ll be able to see a watercolor painting of a Max look-a-like to remind me of why I’m doing what I’m doing.

What do you enjoy about your job?

The people. I have always been an introvert, but at the clinic, I love to keep things light and fun, and I love the relationships I can build with my clients. I grew up working for a vet that had been practicing for around 30 years, and he still had clients from early on in his career. This inspired me, and showed me that we are not only practitioners but family members!

Bachelors of Science with a concentration in Biochemistry from Georgia Gwinnett College

What do you love most about living in Memphis?

The Bass Pro Pyramid! As an avid outdoorsman, my dad and I stopped there the first year it opened on a return trip from Arkansas and I absolutely loved it. But I also enjoy the BBQ Memphis is known for as well as the history that surrounds the city!

What secret talent do you wish that you had?

X-ray vision. I wish I could look at an animal and immediately have an idea what’s going on internally, and no radiation exposure!
