Marion Welsh, DVM

“I became a veterinarian to foster the human/animal bond. I have had the privilege to love so many animals growing up from dogs to cats to horses and all the in-between. I truly believe the love I received from them in return has formed me into the person I am today.”

Why did you become a vet?

Every year in grade school, my teachers asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Year after year, my answer never changed. What my teachers never asked me was why. I’ve known all along, but have not been able to put it into words until now. I became a veterinarian to foster the human/animal bond. I have had the privilege to love so many animals growing up from dogs to cats to horses and all the in-between. I truly believe the love I received from them in return has formed me into the person I am today. What a privilege it is to come to work every day and ensure that someone else gets to have that same experience.

What do you enjoy about your job?

There are so many things! I love teaching. A big part of my day to day is client education. I love my clients. They put so much trust in me to take care of their fluffy family members. I love my teammates from the receptionists to the technicians to my fellow doctors and all the support staff. These guys make coming to work fun! I love simple cases, where making a small change can make a large impact in a pet’s life. I also love the difficult cases, where I get to put on my detective hat and dig deep to find the cause of my patient’s illness and then treat it. I love surgery! The OR is definitely my happy place. I love community outreach where I am able to teach my community about animal welfare. Overall, I love making a difference.

Education

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine

What do you love most about living in Memphis?

The food, the music, and the PEOPLE! From the moment I moved to Memphis, I was instantly welcomed by everyone I encountered. From the grocery clerk to my clients. There is nothing like southern hospitality!

What secret talent do you wish that you had?

I wish I had super speed! I would be able to see and help so many more patients AND finish my charts. I could eat all the southern comfort food and drink so many Diet Cokes.
