What Is a Vet Emergency?
Severe issues like constant vomiting, heavy bleeding, seizures, blood in urine and visible injuries mean your pet needs urgent help. Act quickly if you notice your dog or cat exhibiting these signs:
- Severe bleeding or bleeding not stopping within five minutes
- Choking, difficulty breathing, continuous coughing or gagging
- Bleeding from the nose, mouth, rectum, or the presence of blood in urine
- Inability or pain when urinating or passing stool
- Eye injuries
- Suspected or known ingestion of poison (e.g., antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison)
- Seizures or staggering
- Fractured bones, severe lameness or immobility of leg(s)
- Signs of pain or extreme anxiety
- Heat stress or heatstroke
- Severe vomiting or diarrhea (more than twice in 24 hours) or combined with illness or other listed problems
- Refusal to drink for 24+ hours
- Unconsciousness
For less obvious cases, our on-call doctors and skilled veterinary technicians can guide you on what to do.

Emergency Veterinarian Services
What if we’re closed?
We are animal lovers too, and we know that accidents don’t always happen during office hours. A Pet Hospitals emergency veterinary doctor can be reached until 2 hours after we close via our on-call voicemail system. Many times, the doctor can help you determine whether your pet needs emergency care or if the problem can wait until the office is open.
However, if you know that you need a Memphis emergency vet immediately while our offices are closed, we recommend that you take your pet to one of our partners (emergency clinics) based on your location. PetMed Emergency Center is located in Cordova and Animal Emergency Center is located near Midtown, and they offer:
- After-hours hospitalization and monitoring
- Emergency medicine
- Emergency vet care for trauma, accidents, sudden illnesses, and assistance with chronic ailments
- Specialized diagnostics
- Complete surgical services
Our partners’ contact information is below. We hope that you and your furry friends never need emergency vet care, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!
