Amanda Shoemake, DVM

Dr. Shoemake knew from her early teens that she wanted to be a veterinarian. “When I was 13, I started work as a veterinary assistant after school, during the summers and during any other free moment I could find. I absolutely loved the job. My parents even complained that I wouldn’t take a day off from work!”

Why did you become a vet?

I began working in the Veterinary field at the early age of 13. It quickly became a passion and I enjoyed every aspect of the field immensely. From that point forward, there was never a question in my mind about what career I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

I enjoy the diversity and challenges that come with this job. Every day and every case is different. I’m constantly being challenged and also learning new things.

I am a 2008 graduate from Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, I spent 4 years working at a small animal practice in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have been with The Pet Hospitals since 2012.

What do you love most about living in Memphis?

I love the people. While I was living in Las Vegas, I dearly missed feeling a strong sense of community. And, I missed good old Southern hospitality. The people make the city of Memphis a beautiful place

What secret talent do you wish that you had?

I wish I had singing talent. I’d love to be able to sing and to sing in tune without making myself cringe. No worries though, despite this lack of talent, I still enjoy singing to my kids (who promptly tell me to be quiet), and I still sing along to the radio in the car.
